Burning (deleting) and self-destructing on Foundation

If you’d like to permanently delete or burn your Foundation creations, we’ll walk you through the steps to remove NFTs, Collections, Drops, Editions, and Galleries below. Note that these steps are only effective on NFTs and collections created on Foundation.

Burning an NFT

Burning an NFT destroys the token and removes it entirely from the blockchain. Burning an NFT token is an irreversible action and can only be completed by the creator of the NFT.

Only the creator of the NFT on Foundation will be able to burn the token - if the token isn't owned by the creator, it will need to be transferred prior to burning.

Follow these steps to burn an NFT.

  1. Navigate to the NFT page for the token you’d like to burn.
  2. Remove the Reserve and Buy Now prices if applicable.
  3. Transfer the NFT to the creator if applicable.
  4. Click the "Manage" button and select “Burn NFT”. If the “Burn" option isn't available, try disconnecting and reconnecting your wallet.
  5. Confirm the burn action on the confirmation page.
  6. Sign the transaction in your wallet and pay the required gas fees to complete the transaction to delete the gallery. Gas fees are the cost of interacting with the blockchain.

Removing a collection

If you'd like to remove a collection that you created on Foundation, you'll need to burn all NFTs within the collection, then destroy the collection by following these steps. Refer to the previous section of this article to burn all NFT tokens within the collection.

  1. Navigate back to the empty collection page.
  2. Click the •••, and select "Self-destruct". If the "Self-destruct" option isn't available, try disconnecting and reconnecting your wallet.
  3. Confirm the self-destruct action on the confirmation page.
  4. Sign the transaction in your wallet and pay the required gas fees to complete the transaction to delete the gallery.

If you encounter an error when self-destructing the collection, try appending your collection URL with "/self-destruct" like this: "https://foundation.app/collection/[yourcollectionslug]/self-destruct".

Note that the "Self-destruct" option should only be available if the collection was created on Foundation. If you encounter any issues, please reach out to Foundation Support and we'll be happy to help.

Self-destructing a drop

If NFTs have been minted from your drop, you’ll need to burn all NFTs from your drop before you can self-destruct. To burn NFTs from your drop, collectors will need to transfer them back to your wallet for you to complete the burn action.

  1. Refer to the first section of this article to burn all NFT tokens within the drop.
  2. Navigate back to the empty drop page.
  3. Click the •••, and select "Self-destruct". If the "Self-destruct" option isn't available, try disconnecting and reconnecting your wallet.
  4. Confirm the self-destruct action on the next page.
  5. Sign the transaction in your wallet and pay the required gas fees to complete the transaction to delete the gallery.

If you encounter an error when self-destructing the drop, try appending your drop URL with "/self-destruct" like this: "https://foundation.app/collection/[yourdropslug]/self-destruct".

Self-destructing an edition

If NFTs have been minted from your edition, you’ll need to burn all NFTs from your edition collection before you can self-destruct. To burn NFTs from your edition, collectors will need to burn them on your behalf or transfer them back to your wallet for you to complete the burn action.

  1. Refer to the first section of this article to burn all NFT tokens within the edition.
  2. Navigate back to the empty edition page.

If you encounter an error when self-destructing the edition, try appending your edition URL with "/self-destruct" like this: "https://foundation.app/collection/[yourdropslug]/self-destruct".

Burning a gallery

If you feel that your gallery's curation experience has ended, you can delete it from the Foundation Marketplace. The reserve auction prices of the NFTs remain unchanged when a gallery is deleted. If there were any NFTs in live auctions at the time of deletion, the auctions would continue, but the curator fee would no longer apply to the final sale.

To delete a gallery, you’ll need to burn your gallery NFT to delete it.

  1. Go to the Ownership page in your gallery dashboard.
  2. Burn your gallery NFT.
  3. Confirm the transaction in your wallet.

All listings will no longer be associated with this gallery, and your gallery will be permanently deleted. Please make sure you’re burning the correct gallery in your dashboard.
