Foundation is ushering in a new era of the internet that’s decentralized and community-driven—welcome to web3. We’ll connect you to a revolutionary global network where your creativity is valued—and it all starts with setting up your wallet and getting some ETH.

Before we get started, we need to cover a couple of important terms:

  • Wallet: Your wallet is your point of access to the expansive ecosystem of web3. It’s portable, it connects to your web browser, and it holds all of your NFTs and cryptocurrency. You’ll need to connect your wallet to Foundation to participate in our marketplace—although Foundation won’t have access to your wallet, and we can’t control it. Foundation currently supports wallets set up through MetaMask or WalletConnect.

  • Ether (ETH): ETH is the native currency used for all transactions on the Ethereum network. It’s the currency currently used on Foundation to buy and sell NFTs

Next, we’ll show you how to set up your wallet and get ETH.

Step One: Set up your wallet

Your wallet is essential for managing your digital assets: it’s your gateway to Foundation.

Getting started is easy:

  • Download and install the MetaMask browser extension from the MetaMask website.

  • Select “Create a Wallet.”

  • Create a username and password.

  • Record your uniquely assigned Secret Recovery Phrase. If you lose this series of words or forget what order they’re in, you will lose access to your wallet, and it will be unrecoverable. We recommend writing the phrase on a piece of paper and storing it in a memorable, safe, and secure spot.

  • The next step will ask you to confirm the phrase by placing all of the words in the assigned order.

  • MetaMask should now be set up and will appear in your browser extensions.

  • If you have any trouble, visit MetaMask Support.

Alternatively, you can use WalletConnect to link a variety of Ethereum wallets to Foundation. Rainbow is another simple, fun, and secure Ethereum wallet supported by WalletConnect. Set up a Rainbow wallet using their guide.

Learn more about WalletConnect and check out their full list of supported wallets for more options.

As of May 2022, you can now also connect to Foundation using Coinbase Wallet.

Step Two: Send Ether (ETH) to your wallet

Now, we will cover a couple of options for transferring ETH into your wallet:

  • Buy ETH on a cryptocurrency exchange like Coinbase and send it to your wallet.

  • Buy ETH directly from MetaMask using Wyre or Transak

Buy ETH from a cryptocurrency exchange

ETH can be bought from a cryptocurrency exchange, like Coinbase, and sent directly to your wallet.

  • Head to coinbase.com and click “Get Started” to set up your account.

  • Set up your account and verify your identity.

  • Connect a debit card or bank account to authorize your account.

  • Click “Buy / Sell,” and select “Ethereum.” Click “Preview Buy” to confirm your order and then select “Buy Now” to complete the purchase of ETH. To learn more about how to buy ETH from Coinbase, visit their Help Center

  • After you’ve purchased ETH on an exchange, you can send it to your wallet using your wallet’s public address.

  • Navigate to your wallet by opening up the MetaMask browser extension.

  • Click on “Account” to copy your Ethereum address. Your Ethereum address is a 42-character code that is publicly viewable—similar to a bank account number—that will let you transfer and receive crypto from anyone, anywhere in the world.

  • From the Coinbase site, select “Portfolio” and find “Ethereum”.

  • Click “Send” and paste in your Ethereum wallet address from MetaMask in the “To” field.

  • Check that you’ve pasted in the correct wallet address. If you send crypto to the wrong address you will not be able to get it back.

  • Click “Continue” then “Confirm” to send your ETH. The ETH will transfer within minutes.

Buy ETH directly from MetaMask using Wyre or Transak

There are three buttons under your ETH balance in MetaMask: “Buy”, “Send”, and “Swap”.

  • Click “Buy” to be redirected to Wyre or Transak, which allow you to use a debit card or bank transfer to deposit ETH into your MetaMask wallet.

  • View the complete list of geographic restrictions for Wyre and Transak before proceeding.

Step Three: Connect your wallet to Foundation

There’s no need to sign up for an account on Foundation—just connect your wallet.

  • Click “Connect Wallet” in the upper-righthand corner. A prompt from your wallet will appear—if it doesn’t, find the MetaMask fox icon in your browser extension toolbar.

  • Click the “Sign” button in your MetaMask to explicitly confirm your intention to connect your wallet to Foundation.
