What is Drops?

— A new way to create.
— A new tool to explore.
— A new game to play.

Drops is a powerful way to create and collect on Foundation.

Creators deploy a creator-owned ERC-721 smart contract that represents their drop, and collectors can mint NFTs from the drop page. Creators can set a fixed price or use a rebate Dutch auction where everyone ultimately pays the same fair price. Learn more in the Dynamic Pricing FAQ.

Drops is a significantly more gas-efficient and cost-effective way for creators to launch large projects. You can create a drop of up to 10,000 NFTs with roughly the same amount of gas it takes to mint a single NFT.

The drop collection is fixed at the beginning of the project, and creators cannot segment their drop or add NFTs later. For collectors, minting from a fixed-size collection provides certainty that the supply is locked forever and will not expand in the future.

Reveals and Randomization

With Drops, the creator uploads a pre-reveal image that is initially used for all NFTs in the drop. After opening the drop for minting, the creator reveals the final assets when they’re ready, creating a shared moment of excitement for collectors. During the reveal, assets are randomized to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to receive something special.

What is minting?

Minting is the process of creating a new NFT. With Drops, minting happens when a collector purchases an NFT. When a purchase is made, the collector’s wallet interacts with the creator’s smart contract to mint and collect the NFT.

Are Drops fair?

Yes! Drops are designed with fairness in mind and include two core protections for collectors:

  1. When you mint from a drop, you receive a pre-reveal asset. The creator reveals the final NFT at a later date, preventing metadata from being known during the sales period and ensuring fairness for all buyers.
  2. A maximum of 10 NFTs can be minted per wallet, helping more collectors participate in each drop.

How do I participate in a drop?

Navigate to a drop and click Mint — it’s that easy.

  1. Navigate to the drop collection page.
  2. Select the number of NFTs you want to purchase.
  3. Click Mint (up to 10 NFTs per wallet).
  4. Confirm the transaction in your wallet.
  5. Pay the required gas fee to complete the transaction.

After minting, stay tuned to the creator’s communication channels to learn when the reveal will occur. Once revealed, the final asset will replace the pre-reveal image.

How many NFTs can I collect from Drops?

Each collector can mint up to 10 NFTs per drop.

How are Drops priced?

Creators choose between Fixed Pricing or Dynamic Pricing when launching their drop.

Who pays the gas for Drops?

The collector pays the gas fees.

Where can I learn what Drops are happening on Foundation?

Follow Foundation on Twitter. To receive notifications when a drop starts, follow the creator on Foundation and make sure your email address is added to your profile settings .

Is there a limit on the number of NFTs a creator can include in a drop?

Yes — up to 10,000 NFTs per drop.

Can I use Drops to create an edition?

Drops are best suited for large collections with randomized reveals. Editions are not recommended for drop contracts, as all final assets would be identical. Learn how to create an edition.

If you have additional questions, please reach out to Foundation Support.

What kind of assets are supported?

Pre-reveal images must be JPEG, PNG, or GIF files. Images should ideally be square and at least 640 × 640 pixels. Refer to the technical specs article for file size limits.

For final revealed assets, Foundation supports JPG, PNG, SVG, MP4, and MOV files. Different file types can be used within the same drop. File size limits are detailed in the technical specs article.

Can I add custom metadata or attributes to the NFTs?

Yes! Creators can add custom names, descriptions, and attributes to NFTs using a CSV file. Some creators use metadata to describe traits or materials, while others use it to help collectors identify rare works. Metadata is not visible to collectors until the creator reveals the drop. Learn how to reveal a drop.

Can I launch my drop in an exhibition?

Yes. Once a creator has been invited as a seller to an exhibition, they can launch a drop within it. The curator fee will apply to mints from the drop.

Can I remove my drop from an exhibition?

A drop cannot be removed from an exhibition once launched. To remove it from view, the drop must be self-destructed. Learn more about self-destructing a drop here.
